Trust me on this from personal experience! Overly affected pronunciaton for effect is a perfect way to irritate your classmates, colleagues, and associates. If it's a normal part of your speech or accent, that's ok. If it is not, it shows superiority, supercilliousness, and arrogance. So why does President Obama always say "Pock-ee-stahn" rather than Pakistan? This is not a Chicago or Hawaiian (no birther am I!) accent. It's certainly not John McCain's "Worshington" (I say it that way) or Kennedy's charming speech (Cuber, Mr. Speakah!). We always say in Kentucky that the difference between a "vase" and a "vahse" is about fifty dollars! ;D

The song Hindustan (circa 1918) is an instrumental mainstay for jazz musicians. The version I used is on Youtube, but I strongly recommend the Dixieland band recordings unless you are into curious antiquities. Hindustan also inspired George Gershwin and his then-lyricist Irving Caesar to write a two-step about a purely American location...Swanee! BTW, why stop with Pock-ee-stahn? Why not pronounce Paris "Paree", Vienna "Wein", Munich "Munchen", and Fort Thomas Kentucky "The Hell Hole Of The Universe"? ;D

Error in the intro - "pronunciation". More to follow...lol. ;D
It seems that Senator McCain, from Arizona, in talking about "Worshington", might have picked up a bit of the Merlin dialect. If you're unfamiliar with that, let me explain that Merlin is the state north and east of Worshington, across the Potomac River from Vuhginyuh.
The correct pronunciation is "Pox-istan."
I think the worst was President GWB's pronunciation of the word nuclear- nuklar or nucular. Gotta love Texans!

You must remember that much of O's early schooling was in Indonesia, where Muslims say Istanbul for Constantinople and Palestine for Israel. Conversely, native Virginians pronounce Staunton as Stanton. ;^) 5s
