Many years ago, while "partying" at the co-op I lived in at college, I was watching a golden paisley-like spiral swirl away from me in a field of white light as the following thought came to me --- the first brave explorers who ventured out into the Arctic & Antarctic ice sheets, to reach the Earth's poles, went so far out that they eventually found themselves surrounded by a thousand miles of white wilderness, with no choice but to complete their quest and then make the long, long journey back ... and in those respects ... they were not unlike Dr. Timothy Leary.
